“We can consider people as heroes when they have lived for the Lord, especially when their convictions cost them their livelihoods or even their lives.” GFM/JRB
And that’s just what fills the pages of this stunning book written by Glenna Faye Mathes and Joel R. Beeke. These are true heroes that have lived their lives for the Lord on the full authority and trust of God’s Word. This book is especially encouraging during this time, “the Puritans showed patient endurance under trials. Life was hard in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the Puritans experienced a lot of suffering.” Some of those were the Plague, the Great Fire of London, infant death, women dying in childbirth, sickness, persecution, death, war, and depression. It is encouraging to read of men and women who stayed the course in suffering.
If there is anything that comes to mind when I think of Puritans, it is their intimacy with Christ. “The Puritans believed that Christ is altogether lovely, and so they wanted to be as close to Him and as much like Him as they could.” Their commitment to this and to the Word permeating every area of their life and heart will be an immense encouragement to you on your pilgrim journey to heaven.
Included are beautiful pictures – historical and modern, artifacts, and timelines.
This is the second book in the “Heroes” series, the first being, Reformation Heroes which we LOVED. I was excited to see there are 2 more that could be coming out in the future, “Ancient and Medieval Heroes (I am most excited about this – many think Church History started at the Reformation), and “Modern Heroes”, okay I’m excited about this one too. I’m easily excitable 😆
The two Erin mentions in the last paragraph are not out yet. The newest ones are Evangelical Heroes, volumes 1 and 2, spanning from the 1700s to the modern day.
