This book is EXCELLENT! Although it’s probably better called, “Teaching You How to Teach Them to Work.”

Do you have a proper view of work inside and outside of the home? Are your children diligent? Are you an example of working heartily for the Lord? Are you patiently training them and discipling them in this task? Are you often frustrated with their lack of service and stubborn response to working? What future effects will a lack of training them bring? Where do you even start? Isn’t training your children to work stealing their childhood? Mary Beeke was once a child who knew how to get out of work; she implemented all the tricks of the trade to get out of it as a child. This made her life and her parents’ lives difficult, but with the hard work and commitment of her parents they poured into her, and Mary eventually learned the satisfaction and joy of a job well done. She then went on to marry a diligent man (Dr. Joel Beeke) and raise diligent, hard-working children, who are now passing on the legacy to their own children. Who better to write this resource?!

Work is such a large part of our lives, and it really reflects the glory of God, but we also struggle with the curse and the burden of work, and many of us strain to find joy in the gift God has given. Wrong thinking about work and parenting can make training our children seem cruel; after all, they’re just children once. Laying the foundation and theology of work and the fall, Mary helps with 2 areas answering the questions above, Parental Principles and Practical Principles, and they’re just that: how to parent and how to apply. Mary shows us how the little years are crucial to training our children up to honour the Lord in their work. Prepare yourself: there is a whole lot of heart work in these pages both for parents and for children. I cannot recommend this book highly enough; dare I even say it should be right up there on your bookshelf next to Shepherding a Child’s Heart? Read it and tell me if you think so too!
